Can you tell I was dreaming about spring when I made this? My Aunt wanted a bag that would reflect the coming season and this definitely says spring to me. I have so many tempting upholstery fabric samples on hand, it can be hard to choose just one, so we decide to mix patterns. I absolutely love the outcome. We choose solid colors for the lining, so the bag wouldn’t look too busy. My Aunt requested a shallow pocket to help keep little things organized. It’s not something I would have designed myself, but it’s fun to step outside my comfort zone. My Aunt is a very talented artist, check out her work here, it’s a lot of fun to collaborate with her. Hopefully we’ll do it again soon!
I found this fun paper gem template on www.minieco.co.uk last spring and became obsessed! I love to do little random paper crafts as a more leisure form of creating. Making the gems can be a little slow (glue drying) and I found the best way to be patient was to keep starting another gem. I ended up with a dozen gems. Ever since then I’ve been pondering the idea of making gem garland for my craft show displays, my only concern was how would the gems take the abuse. After taking a closer look at my year old gems I got a little discouraged, the glued edges were coming apart. I started to think about different kinds of paper or glue then my Aunt suggested I try making them form fabric.
Right now I’m still working on getting the process just right so the edges are super clean and crisp, but they look so cool and I can’t wait to make my gem garland. I can feel the obsession kicking in!
I finished my new bag, and I absolutely love it! I’ve wanted to make a bag with this fold over detail since I saw it online, about a year ago. I was a bit nervous that the welt holes, at the top edge, would cause some problems but they behaved with lots of hand basting. My favorite part of this bag is all the options! It can be carried lots of different ways, over the shoulder, with the handles, and under the arm.
The only problem is I’m having a hard time choosing outfits that don’t completely clash, color wise, but I guess that just means I need some new clothes too!
