What Else Can Fabric Ink Do?

04.08.2016 by lauren // Leave a Comment

This has been my never-ending question from day one!  I’ve been experimenting a little here and there, sometimes my ideas have worked out great….others not so much

Splatter paint….YES!!! it worked fantastically on the first try.  This one I’m super pumped about because I absolutely LOVE splatter paint….can’t wait to get more colors!!  : D

Dyeing Expirments

Dyeing…..eh.. not so much, at least not on the first try.  Every try has gotten better thought, and I even used some of the last one to line some of my bicycle bags, it looked really cool.

Ice dyeing…..ehh…it did make an interesting pattern, but nothing like what ice dyeing should look like.  Honestly, I think it looks like I wrapped a pen in fabric and then took a hammer to it! lol

I’m sure I’ll use it for something, I do like it, but I won’t be trying it again.

Using stickers as stencils….YES!  This one was super fun and easy and thanks to computers I can make any shape sticker I want,  now I just need some sticker paper

Making stamps from corks….YES! this one was kinda obvious,  I was already collecting corks and having Kyle carve them into fun simple shapes for me.  Erasers as stamps not so much though, their smooth surface doesn’t really hold onto the ink like the rough surface of a cork.  Fake corks also don’t work for the same reason.

I’m looking forward to trying plastic wrap next…yeah plastic wrap…who would have thought?  But from what I’ve seen on Pinterest it makes a pretty cool abstract design.

Hope your all having a fantastic Friday!

Bike Cards

DSCF0967

Been sewing bike cards lately.  The owners of Hometown Bicycles saw my messy cards and asked if I could make some bicycle themed cards to which I replied of corse!

DSCF0993

I only have 2 colors of fabric ink right now, magenta and navy, but I’m pretty happy with the design I came up with.  I also have white so I mixed them to make purple then added white a little at time for a fun ombre effect.

I also made some of my watercolor cards cuz they are my favorite.  They’re just so super easy and fun and the results are stunning : )  All the cards have white paper on the inside cuz I figured that most people don’t have a white pen laying around….lol

Well, I gotta get back to sewing, I have to drop off all the bike bags and cards on April 6th.  Deadlines drive me crazy even though I gave myself extra days : )

Hope your all having a great week!

The Imperfect Art of Fabric Printing

03.25.2016 by lauren // Leave a Comment

So, after sewing up some of my “planned” fabric printed bags and my “test fabric” I came to the realization that I like the “test fabric” bags better….why…because fabric printing is an imperfect art, each stamp looks a little different and trying to force perfection onto it with rulers and grids is like weeding my garden…..I’ll never win!

DSCF0959

So I’ve been trying to get the hang of freehand stamping.  This was first attempt, it’s a wristlet front.  They get a little smushed together up at the top.  I’m constantly convincing myself that it’s fine, but it really is fine….I’m not gonna redo it, I’m gonna sew it and it’s going to be fantastic (yes, I’m still trying to convince myself)

DSCF0960

Next I did a tote bag, well that one didn’t go so fine….I got more than halfway through and realized my line had become a little crooked….luckily the ink was not seeping through to the other side so I flipped my fabric over and tried again, this time with a little bit if a guide,

DSCF0962

and it came out much better, still beautifully imperfect but close enough that it’s not making me pull out all my hair…lol

Sewing will always be my true love….perfection pays off and I guess it all just comes so easy for me.  It wasn’t always that way, I’ve spent years practicing my top stitching and pattern drafting skills, but now I’m at a point were if I’m in a bad mood I’ll just go top stitch things, somehow it makes me not so grumpy….I’ll sit there and talk to my work and tell it how beautiful I think it is….and thats where I’m trying to get with printing, at peace with its imperfect beauty and aware of what tricks can be used to get things even enough.

Well, thanks for reading my ridiculous rambling : )  I hope you all had a fantastic week!
